The colors in my video are from moving the tint all the way to the left while moving the contrast all the way to the right. Why I have the colors is because I think they show the vibrancy of the city life that I tried to capture downtown.
1. After reflecting on your experiences on Drift 1 and Drift 2, and after generating your Ten Questions, specify a promising place in your Drift area you plan to explore in more depth for Drift 3. Make sure the location is precisely identified, if not with a GoogleMaps link, then through a verbal description of what you are trying to find and where. Explain why this site seems promising.
My first two drifts were taken around the eastside/Riverwest area. I thought I would try something new and take my third drift downtown, particularly around Cathedral Square. This site should give me a completely different view from a residential area to more of a commercial area.
2. Describe how you will limit your image capturing activities in order to generate enough quality material with which to work. You can use the same strategies you used for Drift 2, or pick new ones.
What I decided to use for my image capturing strategies was to take pictures looking up and pictures looking down, with nothing really along the horizon line.
3. Describe how you will limit your sound capturing activities in order to generate enough quality material with which to work
What I did with my sound capturing was just clipping my mics onto my bag while walking. This way I would not have to take out my recorder just to capture a sound, I just left it continuously running for about 10 minutes at a time.
1.What do you see when you look up? 2.What kind of interesting junk can you find in an alley? 3.What sounds do you hear everyday? 4.Does anyone notice you holding mics? 5.How much does weather affect a drift? 6.Are most of the downtown buildings old? 7.How many conversations can you hear on a busy street corner? 8.How is it different from drifting alone than with a partner? 9.Why are pigeons so fun to chase? 10.How does Milwaukee’s skyline change daily?
4. Describe your favorite experience, situation, place, or recollection from either of your Drifts. Be specific about what happened, how you felt, how you reacted, and why you think this particular experience affected you so much.
My favorite experience probably was walking around downtown. I had never been in that area before so I was interested to see what was around each corner and down the block. Being surrounded by large buildings also made me feel really small which was kind of a weird feeling, since I grew up in a smaller town. I also loved to watch the different sorts of people that were walking around downtown and hearing the random conversations they are having as they pass by.
3. Describe three surprises or unexpected situations you encountered on your Drifts and in the days that followed. The surprise could stem from your expectations that conflicted with "on the ground" realities, cultural or social issues of which you were previously unaware, feelings and reactions that you did not expect to have, appearances and soundings of things you did not expect, good or bad outcomes of "on the spot" decisions you had to make, or the discovery of "deeper" realities in the materials you brought home. (Again, skip anything technology-related!)
What I was first surprised about is how little people pay attention to you…even if you are wearing headphones and holding mics. I thought for sure someone would ask me what I was doing at some point on my drifts, but no one ever did. Does this mean that nobody even notices or cares what other people are doing?
On my second drift I was surprised how much garbage people go through. I walked down a few alleys and a lot of garbage cans were just overflowing with junk. Then I looked at my garbage can and realized I was just as guilty as everyone else. It definitely made me more aware of what I am wasting.
On my last drift I decided to walk around downtown because I had never actually walked around there ever. I was surprised at all the amazing architecture and cool shops they had down there.
2. Describe, with details, two situations during Drift 1 and/or 2 in which you felt unusually peaceful, at ease, or contemplative.
On my original drift one walk, later I lost the sounds from it, I walked down to Lake Michigan while it was snowing. Although it was freezing along the lake I felt very peaceful watching the snow fall onto the lake.
On my second drift I felt very contemplative as I was sitting, smoking on my back steps into the alley behind my house. I was about to start my second drift and I was trying to think about what I wanted to achieve in this drift.
1. Describe two situations that aggravated, bothered, shocked or otherwise stressed you during Drift 1 or 2. (Please note that the situation CANNOT be technology-related.)
What most aggravated me about the first two drifts was the Wisconsin weather. Both times I went on my drifts it was very cold, it was even snowing one of the days I went. It would have been nice if it would have been more pleasant weather out.
What stressed me about my drifts was not being satisfied with the sounds and pictures that I had taken, but I had to use them anyway. If I could go back I would probably went on several walks for each drifts to get a variety of walks to choose from.
